Who is Joan Hamel?
Joan Hamel, founding member of the Kansas Health Care Association Nursing Advisory committee was said to be a nurse among nurses. She was a lifelong nurse and caregiver. Joan received her Nursing Certificate from Marymount College then worked as an RN at Gelvin-Haughey Clinic, St. Joseph Hospital and various Nursing Homes. She found her calling when caring for the elderly. She was a true professional in the long term care field, serving more than 25 years as Director of Nursing, Consultant and Educator. Joan was a pioneer in Kansas Health Care Association and the founder of the Nurse Advisory Council at KHCA. After a nearly life and career ending auto accident, the other nurses with the advisory committee rallied and decided to honor Joan’s lifetime commitment to teaching and learning by founding an educational scholarship in her name.
